Wrigley Field

Wrigley Field has been the home of the Chicago Cubs since the park was formally opened back in April 23, 1914. At that time, the park was built with an investment of $250,000. Though both park and team have been sentimental favorites of Chicago baseball fans, the Chicago Cubs have not been very good at this game compared to rival teams. The Chicago Cubs played their first game at Wrigley Field on April 20, 1916. Wrigley Field was designed by Zachary Taylor Davis (architect) and has a clover with Merion Bluegrass surface where the Chicago Cubs play. As of 2006, the park has a capacity of 41,118 spectators. It was only in 1988 when lights were installed at Wrigley Field for the benefit of the Cubs.

Baseball

Not many people know this but Wrigley Field was placed in its current location to allow baseball fans easy access from the Milwaukee Road train. The fact that Wrigley Field is situated more than 600 feet above sea level is ironically the reason that the average numbers of home runs hit here are higher than average (and many of them not those of the home team Chicago Cubs.) Another factor behind so many home runs is exposure of the baseball players to heat during the day games. Charlie Weegham used to own Wrigley Field from 1914 to 1916 because he owned a team called the Chicago Federals. From 1916 onwards, ownership transferred to and has been retained by the Chicago Cubs. The park was only named Wrigley Field in 1926.
