Glessner House Museum

Located in the heart of Chicago, Glessner House Museum is situated on the southwest corner of Prairie Avenue and 18th Street. Glessner House Museum is a gateway to knowledge - from the glamour of the Gilded Age, to the vast cultural changes surrounding World War I, to the excitement of the Jazz Age and Prohibition.

The history of the Museum goes like this: In 1885, John and Frances Glessner commissioned the renowned American architect Henry Hobson Richardson to build them a house on the exclusive Prairie Avenue. The result was a beautiful and an elegant home.

The tours are led by trained docents and last approximately one hour in each house (and one hour for the walking tour). Glessner House and Clarke House do not offer self- guided tours of the interiors at this time. A limitation of 12 visitors per tour are observed and are on a first- come, first- serve, walk- in basis. However, custom tours for groups of 10 or more are available with at least 4 weeks advanced reservations.

Glessner House Museum has over 6,000 artifacts, a large number of ceramic vases and tiles, Art Nouveau glass, silver and other decorative objects. The museum is known world over for picture frames, ceramics and textile designs and works of art by the renowned wood carver Isaac Scott.
