Oak Woods

Whether a king or a beggar, all after their life- time achievements, fall as a prey in the hands of death. Oak Woods is a historical cemetery which embraces in it renowned personalities like Mayors Thompson and Washington, crime boss Big Jim Colosimo, Olympian Jesse Owens, civil rights activist Ida B. Wells, and physicist Enrico Fermi.

Even the six thousand Confederate soldiers, prisoners of war who died at Camp Douglas, are buried together beneath a towering monument.

Oak Woods is located at 67th and Cottage Grove, not far from the lake. The cemetery was established in 1854. The cemetery is close to the railroad lines.The oldest tomb in Oak Woods is the tomb of C.W. Smith. Located near the entrance, this ancient limestone mausoleum has turned nearly black with age.

Slaughter's monument could be considered the most unusual in this section - the deep black granite provides a vivid contrast to the ordinary whites and greys.

Time and unforeseen occurrences befall all and no one can control the cruel hands of death which take our loved one's away from us.
