The Newberry Library

Founded in 1887, The Newberry Library was set up and still stands as a landmark feature. Walter Loomis Newberry, the pioneer of the museum left over 2 million dollars to found a free public library. The Newberry Library has attained world- fame. It embraces the finest rare books, maps and manuscript collections. The museum is not only referred to by the Chicagoans, but also by the scholars from world over. The Library offers a vast array of lectures, seminars, concerts, and other public programming in addition to exhibits related to its collections.

The Library's holdings span the history and culture of western Europe from the Middle Ages to the mid- twentieth century and the Americas from the time of first contact between Europeans and Native Americans.

The Newberry's A.C. McClurg Bookstore specializes in books which complement the holdings of the Library. Its specialties include American Studies, Medieval and Renaissance History, Literature, Native American Studies, Genealogy, Cartography, and books about Chicago and the Midwest.

In addition, the bookstore offers a thoughtful selection of general interest titles, book- related gifts, and a wide selection of greeting cards and stationery.
